Then Rebecca Said the Line Hannah Never Forgot
Rebecca looked directly at her.
“At least Chloe actually has someone who wants to marry her.”
Silence.
Rebecca’s expression changed instantly.
She knew she’d gone too far.
Chloe stared at her mother.
“Mom.”
Hannah stopped pulling.
For a second, she just stood there.
Then she said quietly:
“Wow.”
Rebecca immediately tried to fix it.
“That came out wrong.”
Hannah answered:
“No. It came out exactly how you meant it.”
She took the garment bag and walked toward the stairs.
Rebecca followed.
“Put it back.”
Hannah turned.
“No.”
Rebecca reached for the hanger again.
Hannah moved it away.
And that was when the front door opened.
