Rachel Said She Had No Choice

Rachel lived almost three hours away.

By the time Emily finally got her on the phone that evening, she was furious.

“You sold the house without even calling me?”

Rachel’s response was cold.

“The bills weren’t going to stop just because Mom died.”

“That doesn’t mean you sell it behind my back.”

“You weren’t paying anything.”

Emily stood up from her kitchen table.

“I told you I would help.”

“You kept saying you would.”

Their mother had left behind medical bills, repairs, taxes and several months of unpaid expenses.

Rachel said she had been dealing with all of it.

Emily knew some of that was true.

But there was one problem.

Their mother had always said the house was meant for both daughters.

Emily brought that up.

Rachel went quiet.

Then she said something Emily hadn’t expected.

“There wasn’t anything left to split.”

“What does that mean?”

“The house covered the debts.”

Emily stopped.

“All of it?”

“Most of it.”

“And the rest?”

Another pause.

“I handled it.”

That answer stayed with Emily long after the call ended.
