There Was One Last Surprise
Nathan called Emily again several months later.
This time, he wasn’t calling about anything hidden.
His family had finished renovating the house.
Before throwing away some old materials from the attic, he had found a small wooden panel with dozens of pencil marks.
At first, he thought they were construction notes.
Then he realized what they were.
Height measurements.
Emily — Age 7
Rachel — Age 10
Emily — Age 12
Rachel — Age 15
Their mother had tracked their height against the attic doorway for years.
Nathan asked if she wanted the board before they replaced it.
Emily drove over that weekend.
Rachel came with her.
For the first time since their mother’s funeral, the sisters stood together inside the house where they had grown up.
Nathan handed them the board.
Rachel ran her fingers over the faded pencil marks.
Then she started crying.
Emily didn’t say anything.
She simply stood beside her.
They couldn’t get the house back.
And neither of them could undo what had happened.
But they carried the small wooden board outside together.
This time, they both knew exactly what they were taking with them.
