The House Was Already Gone

The man’s name was Nathan.

He and his wife had recently moved from Indiana with their two children.

As far as he knew, the transaction had been completely normal.

The house had been listed.

They had viewed it.

They had made an offer.

The paperwork had closed.

Nathan disappeared inside for a moment and returned holding a folder.

Emily barely heard what he was saying.

One name immediately caught her attention.

Rachel Carter.

Her older sister.

Emily stared at the paperwork.

Rachel had sold the house.

Without telling her.

“Are you sure?” Nathan asked.

Emily looked up.

“My sister sold this?”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“She was the seller.”

Emily called Rachel before she even reached her car.

No answer.

She called again.

Voicemail.

Then she sent one message.

You sold Mom’s house?

The reply came eleven minutes later.

We need to talk.
