Then Her Mother Said the Wrong Thing
Linda stood.
“You’re getting too emotional.”
Sophie stared at her.
“My college fund is gone.”
“You have options.”
“What options?”
“Loans.”
The room went quiet.
Sophie actually thought she had misheard her.
“You want me to borrow thirty-eight thousand dollars because you gave my money to Ryan?”
“Your father and I had loans.”
“So?”
“Lots of students do.”
Sophie shook her head.
“Grandma saved that money so I wouldn’t have to.”
Linda crossed her arms.
“Your grandmother cared about your brother too.”
That was when Sophie stopped arguing.
She picked up her bag.
Her father asked where she was going.
Sophie answered:
“To find out what Grandma actually said.”
