The Real Argument Finally Came Out
Ryan had been struggling financially.
His business had failed earlier that year.
He was behind on several bills.
A few relatives had apparently told Carol they planned to “help Ryan out” around the time of the wedding.
Carol assumed some of those relatives might put money for Ryan inside Josh and Megan’s wedding cards.
Megan couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“So you’re opening our wedding gifts to see if some of the money is actually for Ryan?”
Carol responded:
“Only from family.”
Megan looked at Josh.
“Did you know about this?”
“No.”
Carol cut in.
“Because I knew you’d overreact.”
Josh stared at her.
“That was your clue not to do it.”
Then Carol Said Something Worse
She pointed toward the bag.
“Half these people are here because of our family.”
Megan’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means not every dollar in there is because of you.”
Josh immediately said:
“Mom.”
Carol continued.
“Your father and I paid for a huge part of this wedding.”
Megan stared at her.
“So?”
“So don’t act like everything in that bag magically belongs to you.”
Silence.
Josh looked shocked.
Megan looked angrier.
Ryan looked like he wanted to disappear.
