Her Mother-in-Law Took the Wedding Gift Envelopes “For Safekeeping”—Then the Bride Caught Her Handing Them to Her Son

Megan noticed the gift table looked wrong at 8:47 p.m.

She remembered the time because she had just checked her phone before heading back to the dance floor.

Earlier that evening, the table had been covered in cards.

White envelopes.

Gold envelopes.

Small gift bags.

A wooden card box her sister had made by hand.

Now the table looked almost empty.

Megan stopped.

Her cousin Rachel walked up beside her.

“What?”

“Where are the cards?”

Rachel looked.

“Oh.”

Megan turned toward her.

“Did someone move them?”

“I don’t know.”

Megan looked around the ballroom.

Her new husband, Josh, was talking to his college friends.

His mother, Carol, was nowhere in sight.

Neither was Josh’s older brother, Ryan.

Megan suddenly remembered something Carol had said earlier.

“Don’t worry about the cards. I’ll keep an eye on them.”

At the time, Megan had thought she was being helpful.

Now she wasn’t so sure.
