Then the Mother Said Something Before Sitting Down
As she placed her bag under the seat, she looked toward Rachel.
“I’m glad somebody was willing to help.”
Rachel looked at her.
The implication was obvious.
Rachel answered:
“So am I.”
The mother stared at her.
The passenger across the aisle quietly shook his head.
Rachel noticed.
“What?”
He replied:
“Nothing.”
“No, say it.”
He hesitated.
Then:
“You technically didn’t do anything wrong.”
Rachel waited.
“But?”
“But sometimes being technically right isn’t the same thing as being kind.”
Rachel leaned back in her seat.
“And sometimes being kind is really easy when you’re volunteering somebody else’s seat.”
The man didn’t answer.
