Victoria Reached for the Tray
Emily moved to pass her.
Victoria suddenly caught the edge of the silver tray.
Emily instinctively held on.
“Please don’t do that.”
Victoria pulled it toward herself.
A champagne glass tipped sideways.
Liquid spilled across a nearby cocktail table.
Several guests gasped.
Emily immediately steadied the tray.
“Ma’am.”
Victoria let go.
Then said:
“Look what you did.”
Emily couldn’t believe what she had heard.
“You grabbed it.”
Victoria responded:
“Don’t raise your voice at me.”
“I didn’t.”
“You’re embarrassing yourself.”
Emily stared at her.
Victoria leaned closer.
“People like you need to learn when to stop.”
Then Victoria Crossed the Line
Emily answered:
“And people like you should learn how to treat employees.”
Victoria froze.
Nobody moved.
For one second, Emily thought the argument was over.
It wasn’t.
Victoria reacted impulsively.
She delivered one quick open-handed slap across Emily’s cheek.
The room went silent.
Completely silent.
Emily recoiled one small step.
Her hand went instinctively to her face.
She wasn’t seriously hurt.
She was simply stunned.
Victoria looked shocked by her own action.
Nathan stopped walking.
“Mom!”
Madison covered her mouth.
Someone near the bar whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Emily slowly looked back at Victoria.
She didn’t shout.
She didn’t touch her.
She just said:
“Did you seriously just hit me?”
Victoria immediately became defensive.
“You were being disrespectful.”
Nathan arrived.
“What are you doing?”
Victoria turned toward him.
“This girl—”
Nathan interrupted.
“She works here!”
Victoria replied:
“Exactly.”
That single word made several people look at her differently.
