One Year Later
On Chloe’s birthday, Sandra handed her a small gift.
Chloe opened it.
A sweater.
She laughed.
“That’s it?”
Sandra froze.
Chloe immediately grinned.
“I’m kidding.”
Ava nearly spit out her drink.
Even Mark laughed.
Sandra pointed at both girls.
“Very funny.”
The tension around money didn’t disappear entirely.
But the family became more honest about it.
Sandra stopped using:
“She’s my daughter.”
Mark stopped assuming silence meant Ava was okay.
And Ava stopped trying to be the child who never caused problems.
The following Christmas, Sandra asked both girls the same question:
“What would actually help you this year?”
It was a simple question.
But Ava noticed.
Sometimes fairness doesn’t begin with giving everyone the exact same thing.
Sometimes it begins with making sure everyone gets asked.
