Claire Immediately Knew Something Was Wrong

The woman started walking toward them.

Claire looked at Evan.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Who is that?”

Evan didn’t answer.

The woman stopped several feet away.

“You weren’t answering me.”

Claire looked between them.

“Evan?”

The woman finally noticed Claire’s expression.

Then looked at Claire’s stomach.

Then at the decorations.

Her own expression changed.

“Oh my God.”

Claire’s sister Jenna stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

The woman answered:

“Madison.”

Evan finally spoke.

“Madison, you need to leave.”

That sentence made everything worse.

Because he hadn’t asked:

Who are you?

He knew exactly who she was.

Madison Was Pregnant Too

Claire noticed it immediately.

She wasn’t showing as much as Claire.

But enough.

Claire looked down at Madison’s stomach.

Then at Evan.

“Why is she here?”

Madison stared at him.

“You told me you were separated.”

Nobody moved.

Claire’s mother whispered:

“What?”

Evan stepped toward Madison.

“Not here.”

Madison backed away.

“Don’t touch me.”

Claire felt something inside her go cold.

“Separated?”

Madison looked at Claire.

“He told me you two were basically done.”

Claire said:

“We had breakfast together this morning.”

Silence.
