Elena, the lawyer, listened without interrupting. When Lucia finished, she asked for the messages and the recording.

“We need to address the attempted removal and your response separately,” she said. “Don’t hide anything because you’re ashamed of it.”

Lucia nodded.

Elena began arranging requests for clearer restrictions on collection and contact. Lucia informed Mateo’s school about the incident and confirmed who was authorized to collect him. She kept every conversation in writing.

Meanwhile, Daniel went to his mother’s flat.

He expected another argument. Instead, Carmen showed him a document and demanded that he stand behind it.

It stated that Lucia had agreed to Mateo staying at the family house. Her name appeared at the bottom.

Daniel stared at the signature.

“She didn’t agree to this.”

“She agreed to family helping years ago.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

Carmen reached to take the paper back. He kept hold of it.

“Who signed this?”

“Don’t ask questions you don’t want answered.”

Daniel photographed the document and sent it to Lucia. His message contained no defense of his mother.

“I found this. I never authorized the trip. I’ll confirm that in writing.”

Lucia read it twice before forwarding it to Elena.

The paper changed the shape of the incident. Carmen’s actions could no longer be explained simply as a visit that had gone badly. There had been a destination, a booked car, and a document Lucia had never signed.

When relatives asked why she had involved a lawyer, Lucia sent a short response.

“I regret striking Carmen. She attempted to take Mateo without my agreement. There is a recording and further evidence. Please do not question Mateo about it.”

Some apologized. Others stopped messaging.

Daniel visited at an agreed time and sat at the kitchen table, his phone untouched beside him.

“She says you’re destroying the family.”

“What did you say?”

“That she made a plan to take my son and lied to me about it.”

Lucia watched him carefully.

“Saying that to me is easy.”

“I said it to her.”

It was the first useful thing he had done in months. Lucia accepted the written statement he brought. Trust would take longer.
